Hull City Hall
Early 2002: Local Entertainer, Singer and Beautiful South & Housemartins fan Eddy Faulkner decides to form a Beautiful South Tribute Band on the strength of numerous comments made to him that he looks and sounds like Paul Heaton. Soon after, he begins the search to find a female singer to accompany him. After holding auditions at The Springhead, Eddy finds the hidden talent he’s looking for in the shape of Liz Rawding who subsequently joins the project. Eddy and Liz soon become a big hit on the local Pub and Club circuit where they tour performing to backing tracks. The duo are soon inundated with offers of work but find themselves having to turn down an increasing number of gigs due to them not having a live band. This spurs them on to look for Musicians.
July: Martin Lindgren and Alan Sindall go and see The Beautiful Couch at one of their gigs and are suitably impressed. Their friend George Beastall (Liz’s then boyfriend and Bass Player with local band The Shine) mentions to Martin and Alan that the duo are looking for a band. Guitarist Martin and Drummer Alan approach Eddy about joining them and Eddy gives them the go ahead to form a band. Martin calls Keyboard Player Tim Nuttall, a friend from one of his previous bands, and asks if he’d like to join them. Tim agrees and soon the search is on for a Bass Player. Due to a hectic schedule and commitments with other bands George had originally declined the position but agreed to join as a temporary measure until another Bassist was found. However, he soon changed his mind and decided to join the band full time shortly after.
Summer: The band spend much of the Summer busily learning songs in preparation for their first gig.
Sunday 29th September: The newly formed live band play their first gig to a packed and highly enthusiastic audience at The Spread Eagle, Withernsea.
Saturday 26th October: The band make their debut in Hull, playing at Perth Street Club. By chance, established Tribute Band ‘The Beautiful Southmartins’ are also playing in Hull on the same night, performing to a Sold Out crowd at The Springhead. Many fans who can’t get in to Springhead head over to check out the “new” Tribute. They are duly impressed and the word soon spreads about the new Pretenders to the Throne on the Tribute Band circuit
Tuesday 10th December: The Beautiful Couch (supported by MG Greaves and The Lonesome Too) play their first of many appearances at The Springhead.
Friday 20th December: The band perform a double header gig with The Shine at the “Friday Night Live” event at The Lawns in Cottingham.
Boxing Day: The Beautiful Couch play to a Sold Out crowd at Perth Street Club. Drummer Alan Sindall is forced to miss the gig due to ill health, so friend of the band Ben Wilson is called upon to stand-in. He spends most of Christmas Day listening to and learning the 25 tracks that feature in the planned set.
